Chronic pain affects at least 10% of the world’s population – and is one of the most common reasons people seek medical care according to the Center for Disease Control (CDC).
Pain is not necessarily a bad thing. That aching, throbbing, pinching, or stabbing sensation is your nerve’s way of telling your brain (and spinal cord) that something’s wrong. It tells you to move your hand from the hot stove, that you may have taken a harder hit than you realized, or that you need to see a doctor to find out what’s going on internally.
But when pain is pervasive. It can interrupt your life. Let’s change that.
Sometimes, chronic pain has an easily defined cause such as an illness or disease. However, some types of chronic pain are more difficult to diagnose, particularly those accompanying a mental health issue.
While chronic pain is quite pervasive, it doesn’t have to be a life sentence. Thanks in part to the opiate crisis, new and innovative drug-free treatments are continuously researched in order to decrease the public’s reliance on habit-forming medications. The newest players in drug-free pain management include cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT), mindfulness practices, and virtual reality (VR).
VR applications have been shown to be an effective new tool to decrease pain in conjunction with other therapeutic treatments. Our physical therapists and occupational therapists create a personalized treatment plan for each patient and apply the appropriate therapies and interventions to the individual. This includes a combination of conventional exercises and techniques alongside VR therapy using state-of-the-art technology.
Studies show that VR therapy may be an effective tool for pain management. Thanks to the brain’s neuroplasticity, VR can help ‘rewire your brain” as you learn new coping and distraction skills with the VR applications.Â
You’ll meet with your dedicated therapist on a regular basis for personalized therapy. Between sessions, you can text your therapist if you have questions or want to discuss your progress.
